Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp etched his name into the history books this week after he received his fifth Premier League Manager of the Month award, thus becoming the first coach to ever win the prestigious award five times during one season.
The former Borussia Dortmund coach passed current Manchester City gaffer Pep Guardiola who held the previous record with four wins during City’s record-setting “Centurion” club that lit up the league throughout the 2017-18 campaign.
Klopp easily distinguished himself from fellow finalists Guardiola, Southampton’s Ralph Hassenhüttl, and Watford’s Nigel Pearson by leading the current league leaders through another month without losing a single contest in the league, or even conceding a draw.
The Reds sported easy victories over Sheffield United (2-0), Tottenham (1-0), Manchester United (2-0), Wolverhampton (2-1), West Ham (2-0), and Southampton (4-0). Over that span, his squad finished with 13 goals scored and only one conceded.
Outside of the Premier League, Liverpool defeated in-town rival Everton as well as Shrewsbury in the FA Cup to place them in an upcoming round of 16 contest against Chelsea in March.
With his newest accolade, Klopp now sports eight Manager of the Month trophies. He is now tied with Martin O’Neill and Harry Redknapp and is only two wins below David Moyes for third all-time. Unsurprisingly, the two top spots are occupied by all-time greats Arsene Wegner, who finished with 15, and Sir. Alex Ferguson, who ended up with an unbelievable 27.
Klopp will have three more opportunities to further bolster his career total this season and could conceivably break the tie for sole possession of fourth place by the time the Reds hoist their first ever Premier League trophy in May.
