The Mookie Betts trade talks are heating up once again, this time involving the San Diego Padres, sources have told The Athletic. It’s thought that a deal for Betts would definitely take a steep price.
According to reports, Boston would expect significant prospect talent in the deal, and 29-year-old outfielder Wil Myers. Many around the baseball world believe that Betts will start the 2020 season in a Red Sox uniform, but these recent trade discussions seem to indicate both teams have serious interest.
The Padres have reportedly been trying to move Myers for quite some time due to him under performing his contract, one that he’s owed $61M over the next 3 years. Also, with San Diego acquiring Tommy Pham from the Tampa Bay Rays, Myers will probably see the majority of his playing time in right field. Betts manning the right field position in the event of a trade would be an extreme bump to the Padres outfield core.
Betts would also add another bat to help Padres star third baseman Manny Machado and the highly touted young shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. Problem is, Betts would be a rental for San Diego barring an extension.
San Diego has a great looking farm club with talents such as MacKenzie Gore, CJ Abrams, and Luis Patino. I highly doubt Padres General Manage AJ Preller would be willing to give those players up for a one-year rental, even if his name is Mookie Betts.
