Sadio Mane is 2019’s CAF Player of the Year

Liverpool superstar Sadio Mane has won the CAF’s Player of the Year award for 2020 after outlasting both teammate Mohamed Salah and Manchester City’s Riyad Mahrez. This year marks the third consecutive time a player from LFC has been named the best African footballer in the world and is the first time Mane has been bestowed the honor. In 2018 and 2019, Salah hoisted the trophy.

The Senegalese International received 477 votes while the “Egyptian King” Salah scored 325 and the Algerian Mahrez sported 267.

The soft-spoken forward was quick to thank as many people who had positively effected both his career and his life. The 27-year-old said “I would like to thank all the Senegalese people, they push always me. I must also thank my coach, Aliou Casse, and Liverpool, all my teammates there.”

Mane had himself an incredible 2019 by pretty much every possible metric he can be measured. He ended the calendar year with 32 goals in 53 appearances and helped lead Liverpool to title victories in the Champions League, Super Cup, and Club World Cup as well as near victories in both the Community Shield and Premier League.

He ended the 2018-19 campaign as part of the PFA’s Team of the Year and was awarded his first EPL Golden Boot, albeit in a three-way tie.

On the international front, Mane scored three goals en-route to helping Senegal reach their second-ever Africa Cup of Nations final, losing to Algeria.

Earlier this month, Mane landed fifth in FIFA’s Player of the Year award, ahead of notable names like Kylian Mbappe and Eden Hazard, and fourth in the Ballon d’Or, ahead of guys like Salah and Robert Lewandowski.

Both Mahrez and Salah congratulated Mane following the ceremony. Mahrez shared a photo of the two of them competing in the Cup of Nations final with a caption reading “Congratulations to Sadio for his trophy well deserved and sorry I couldn’t come but I had to start scoring for the 2020 trophy. See you next year inch’Allah.” Mahrez competed today in an FA Cup match against Manchester United where he did in fact score.

And Salah shared a photo of Mane at the ceremony on Instagram with the simple caption reading “Congrats bro.” Salah missed the event in Egypt for unknown reasons.
