In a game where Tampa Bay had to answer the call, and bounce back to even the series 1-1 after a lackluster Game One performance, the Lightning did just that.
Given three power play opportunities in the first period, Tampa Bay capitalized on two of them with goals from Brayden Point and Ondrej Palat, both assisted by Kucherov, and Hedman.
Less than a minute after gaining a 2-0 lead, Kevin Shattenkirk tallied a goal to increase Tampa Bay’s lead to 3-0; these three goals came in a span of less than four minutes.
The second period was all Dallas as the Stars outshot Tampa Bay 18-5, and scored a power play goal from Joe Pavelski.
Blake Comeau of Dallas did exit the game during the second period after taking a hit from Kucherov, and did not return with no further updates as of yet.
In the third period the Stars would make it a one goal game at 3-2 just 5:27 into the final period with a goal from Mattias Janmark, however was not able to force overtime as Tampa Bay held off Dallas outshooting them 12-5 in the final twenty minutes.
Tampa Bay’s Andrei Vasilevskiy certainly bounced back from his Game One performance stopping 27 of 29 shots for a save percentage of .931.
On the other hand, Anton Khudobin stopped 28 of 31 shots for a .903 save percentage, still good, but not quite the level of play Dallas needs Khudobin to perform at to beat Tampa Bay in a best of seven game series.
What is interesting, is that in both games thus far Tampa Bay has out hit Dallas with over fifty hits in each games. Along with this, Dallas Stars Captain Jamie Benn, and Assistant Captain Tyler Seguin have yet to a record a single point in the first two games of the Stanley Cup Finals.
The main takeaway from Game Two was that Tampa Bay’s leading scorers actually showed up unlike in Game One. Between Kucherov, Hedman, and Point these three players put up a total of five points compared to zero in Game One.
With the series tied 1-1, Game Three is set for Wednesday night at 8:00 ET as both teams will be looking to take a 2-1 series lead.
