#1 Robert Whittaker Set To Face #4 Jared Cannonier at UFC 248.

The UFC recently announced that Robert Whittaker is set to face off against Jared Cannonier at UFC 248 which will take place March 8th, 2020. The last time we saw Robert Whittaker in action was when he fell to Israel Adesanya for the middleweight championship on October 5th, 2019. Jared Cannonier is coming off of 3 consecutive victories against David Branch, Anderson Silva and Jack Hermansson all by the way of TKO.

A Big Test For Whittaker

By the time of the fight, Whittaker should be 100% recovered from his loss to Adesanya. Getting starched in the 2nd round to lose his strap in his home country is a tough thing to overcome mentally, let alone the physical climb back to readiness. Personally I think he will be back stronger than before and be up for the challenge. He really has nothing to hang his head over with the loss to Adesanya. Adesanya is one of the most dynamic strikers we’ve ever seen, combined with KO power and physical attributes to really do it to anybody. I expect Whittaker to bounce back, but he should definitely not look past Jared Cannonier. A loss to Cannonier could void another shot at the middleweight title for the foreseeable future.

Cannonier’s Opportunity Is Huge

Jared Cannonier is running through the middleweight division right now and at this point he should be incredibly confident. There’s no question that he has the power to knock out anyone on any given day and theres no question about what he is physically. He’s dangerous, he’s confident and he’s been on a tear but will the lights be too bright? If he wins this fight soundly like his previous 3 contests, there is no doubt that he becomes the number 1 contender to face the winner of Israel Adesanya and Yoel Romero for the middleweight title. However, if he loses in a poor performance it could be his last chance for a shot at UFC gold. The middleweight division is stacked with killers and in my opinion it would be incredibly difficult to rebound with another string of high profile victories. This is his time, he needs to WIN.
