As first reported by ESPN’s Dan Rafael, the much anticipated rematch between current World Heavyweight Champion Deontay Wilder, and Lineal Champion Tyson Fury has a set date and location!
The Gypsy King and The Bronze Bomber will square off on February 22nd at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas Nevada live on a ESPN and FOX joint pay-per-view.
Since the duo’s epic confrontation in December of 2018, fans and the sport of boxing itself have been clamoring to see a rematch between the two, especially with the last bout ending in controversial fashion, as it was ruled a draw. Both Wilder and and Fury did NOT shy away from staking their individual claims to victory, despite the judges’ decision.
While both men’s undefeated streaks remained intact, each must forever stare at that glaring 1 in the draw category of their records. However, each will surely look to have a decisive win this time around.
As a part of their the contractual obligations for their rematch, each man needed to compete in two interim fights before they can clash for a second time. Interestingly enough, and both Fury and Wilder had very similar experiences in each of their respective fights.
While Wilder absolutely destroyed challenger Dominic Breazeale in a first round KO back in May, he had to punch his way out of a grueling bout with Luis Ortiz in six rounds this past weekend. Fury would also end up sending everyone home early, as he clobbered Tom Schwarz in the second round of their fight. However, The Gypsy King would find himself in an absolute slobberknocker with Otto Wallin, to which he would have to settle for unanimous decision after twelve rounds.
Additionally, Fury also had a chance to step into a different kind of ring on October 31st, as he squared off against WWE Superstar, and “Monster Among Men”, Braun Strowman at the company’s Crown Jewel event in Saudi Arabia.
Fury would go on to win the match by countout.
While the date and location is secure, Top Rank Chairman Bob Arum states that there are still some more logistics to be worked out, however Arum noted to ESPN that:
“We’re going to have an announcement before Christmas (which will include a press conference), but the fight is happening Feb. 22nd. You can go to sleep on that”
– Bob Arum
