Team of the Week

This week’s team of the week goes to the Cincinnati Cyclones. The Cyclones are 4-1 in their last 5 with their only loss coming to the Wheeling Nailers, who won the game off a Blake Siebenaler goal with 5 seconds left to go in the game. The Cyclones have given up 9 goals in their  last 5 games with goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen having back-to-back shutouts against two really good teams, the Allen Americans and the Fort Wayne Komets. Who will be next week’s team of the week?

Three Stars of the Week

When a goalie is up for star of the week I will take a look at the teams played. This week it was a toss up with Florida Everblades Cam Johnson and Luukkonen. I went with Luukkonen based on his 2 shutouts against the Allen Americans (1st in Mountain) and the Fort Wayne Komets (2nd in Central). The loss to the Wheeling Nailers was against a quality opponent who came off a 6 goal game on Sunday. Johnson was still equally as impressive against the Orlando Solar Bears and Greenville Swamp Rabbits.

1. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, Cincinnati Cyclones (2-1-0 1.33 GAA .938 SV%)
2. Cam Johnson, Florida Everblades (2-0-0 .50 GAA .981SV%)
3. Jan Drozg, Wheeling Nailers (4GP 4G 4A 8pts)

Best Goal Horn Tournament Updates

Only 6 teams remain in the hunt for the Best ECHL Goal Horn; Adirondack, Cincinnati, Greenville, Kalamazoo, Newfoundland, and Wheeling.

Semi-Finals

Greenville vs Kalamazoo

Wheeling/Cincinnati winner vs Adirondack/Newfoundland winner

ICYMI

Wheeling Nailers forward Brandon Hawkins had a ‘Michigan” goal on Tuesday’s game and ended it up on Sportscenter’s Top 10 Plays as #3.

The Brampton Beast had 2 players record hat tricks (Jared Gomes and Lindsay Sparks) in Thursday’s game against the Adirondack Thunder. It was Gomes first career ECHL game. He spent time in the AHL and Europe.

10 Match-Ups to Watch

No particular order

  1. Toledo vs Fort Wayne
  2. South Carolina vs Florida (2x)
  3. Newfoundland vs Reading (3x)
  4. Cincinnati vs Kalamazoo (2x in 3 games)
  5. Wichita vs Allen (3x)
  6. Wheeling vs Indy
  7. Wheeling vs Fort Wayne (3x)
  8. Tulsa vs Rapid City
  9. Rapid City vs Idaho
  10. Atlanta vs Greenville

It may be early in the season, but all these games have important points on the line and every point matters come playoff push time. This does it for another edition of ECHL Weekly. Have a Happy Thanksgiving!
