Jimmie Johnson, after aN 18 year NASCAR career, announced yesterday that the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series season will be his final one. The outpouring of support for the veteran has been incredible, ranging from fellow rivals out on the track to crew members and members of the media. Johnson will indeed hang up the helmet full time at the end of next season, but what kind of legacy does he leave behind?

To sum it up, Jimmie Johnson is one of the best NASCAR drivers of all time and his numbers speak for themselves. 7 championships, and 83 victories rank him first and sixth all time in those categories. His stretch of five championships from 2006-2010 surpassed a previous record of three held by Cale Yarborough when he won the championship from 1976-1979.

Always professional in and out of the race car, Johnson has become the image of what a driver should be when it comes their impact on the sport in this day and age.

“I’m so thankful for 18 incredible years of racing in NASCAR. The sport has been good to me. It has allowed me to do something I truly love. I showed up chasing a dream and achieved more than I ever thought possible. I’m looking forward to next season and celebrating what will be my last year as a full-time NASCAR Cup driver. I know what this team is capable of, and I hope 2020 is one of the best yet,” Johnson stated yesterday.

Once a champion, always a champion. Thank you Jimmie Johnson for your years representing the sport of NASCAR. Thank you, for being one of the greatest of all time. Thank you, from all NASCAR fans out there.
