Hemric Wins Rookie of the Year

Richard Childress Racing driver Daniel Hemric has won the 2019 Monster Energy Cup Series Rookie of the Year award, and doesn’t even have a full time Cup ride in 2020.

Hemric edged out fellow Rookie of the Year competitors Ryan Preece, Matt Tifft and Quin Houff to claim the award. Holding the lead over Preece going into Homestead, Hemric needed a solid finish to secure the award. He did just that, finishing in 12th position, which was tied for his second best finish on the season.

“It’s pretty special to say the least. I wish we were able to win Rookie of the Year and have a couple more solid finishes throughout the year than what we had, but about five or six years ago, myself and Preece somehow ended up tied with four or five races to go, so we knew we had to buckle down. And really proud of this group for doing that,” said Hemric after Sunday’s race at Homestead.

As of now, Hemric will not return to the Monster Energy Cup Series full time in 2020, as it was announced back in September that RCR had chosen not to retain his services for next season. Instead, back to back Xfinity Series Champion Tyler Reddick will move up to drive the No. 8 next season for Richard Childress Racing. However, Hemric will not be without a ride this season as it was announced earlier this week that he had signed on to drive the No. 8 JR Motorsports Chevrolet in the Xfinity Series in 2020 for 21 races.
