College Football Conference Power Rankings: Week 11 (11/07-11/09)

Number 2 vs Number 3. Number 4 getting taken out by Number 7. A couple upsets thrown into the mix, and to top it off, five ranked teams narrowly defeating their opponents to stay in the top-25. That’s what pretty much sums up the latest week of college football. With the regular season winding down and rankings getting down to the nitty-gritty, here is your Conference Power Rankings as of week 11:

American Athletic Conference

ncaa.com & bigonsports.com

1.) #17 Cincinnati Bearcats
Overall Record: 8-1
Conference Record: 5-0
Bottom Line: Count ’em. That’s seven wins in-a-row for the Bearcats following their week 2 lose against, the now ranked #2, Ohio State. It was a blowout game against UConn, being led by QB Desmond Ridder (136 yards and 2 touchdowns) and RB Gerrid Doaks (123 yards and 1 touchdown). The only points for UConn (3) came with nine-minutes left in the game. Cincy looks to keep their AAC title dreams alive as they will face South Florida (4-5 OVR, 2-3 CON).

2.) #18 Memphis Tigers
Overall Record: 8-1
Conference Record: 4-1
Bottom Line: It’s been a battle of attrition between Cincinnati and Memphis for the Group of 5 spot in the New Year’s Six Bowl games, which each team continuing to win. Memphis had a bye this week, allowing Cincy to retain the top spot, but will be back in action down in Houston next week to face the Cougars which has the making to be a high scoring game.

1.) #3 Clemson Tigers
Overall Record: 10-0
Conference Record: 7-0
Bottom Line: Welcome back to the top-4 Clemson. With the loss that Alabama took from LSU, Clemson’s playoff bid is right back on track. With yet another blowout against a very weak opponent (55-10 to NC State), Clemson has nearly cemented their bid for the playoffs, aside from a potential upset. QB Trevor Lawrence picked up 276 yards through the air while tacking on 3 touchdowns. RB Travis Etienne was a workhorse during the game, rushing for 112 yards and scoring 2 touchdowns. Clemson takes on formerly ranked Wake Forest in what was supposed to be the only ranked team Clemson would face during the regular season, but a Wake Forest loss to Virginia Tech put a stop to that.

2.) Virginia Cavaliers
Overall Record: 7-3
Conference Record: 4-2
Bottom Line: With a win against Georgia Tech (33-28), the Cavaliers are now atop an under-achieving ACC Coastal Division, being one game ahead of Pitt. If they can win out (vs Liberty and vs Virginia Tech), Virginia will face Clemson in the ACC Championship. They will face Liberty after a bye-week this week.

3.) Pittsburgh Panthers
Overall Record: 7-3
Conference Record: 5-2

4.) Virginia Tech Hokies
Overall Record: 6-3

Conference Record: 0-5

Big-12 Conference

downtownkc.org & ncaa.com

1.) #10 Oklahoma Sooners
Overall Record: 8-1
Conference Record: 5-1
Bottom Line: Staving off a near upset against Iowa State (42-41), the Sooners are still in the running for a Big-12 Title game against the still undefeated Baylor Bears. Heisman candidate QB Jalen Hurts threw for 273 yards, 3 touchdowns, and an interception. For the first time in quite awhile, Hurts wasn’t the leading rusher for Oklahoma. Sophomore RB Kennedy Brooks led the team with 132 yards and a touchdown. The main question for this Oklahoma team is their defense. They allowed Iowa State to have 5 touchdowns through the air…without even grabbing a pick. They must step up their game now before they go to face Baylor next week in a battle for the top spot in the Big-12.

2.) #13 Baylor Bears
Overall Record: 9-0
Conference Record: 6-0
Bottom Line: Taking care of in-state rival TCU (29-23), Baylor stays undefeated and keeps their hopes alive to finally be Big-12 champs after 5 years (last one dating back to 2014; co-champs with TCU). They get their chance to prove their worth to the College Football Committee this coming week as the top-2 teams in the Big-12 go head-to-head in a winner take all match-up against Oklahoma.

3.) #19 Texas Longhorns
Overall Record: 6-3
Conference Record: 4-2

4.) #22 Oklahoma State Cowboys
Overall Record: 6-3
Conference Record: 3-3

5.) #24 Kansas State Wildcats
Overall Record: 6-3
Conference Record: 3-3

6.) Texas Tech Red Raiders
Overall Record: 4-5
Conference Record: 2-4

7.) Iowa State Cyclones
Overall Record: 5-4
Conference Record: 3-3

8.) Kansas Jayhawks
Overall Record: 3-6
Conference Record: 1-5

9.) West Virginia Mountaineers
Overall Record: 3-6
Conference Record: 1-5

10.) TCU Horned Frogs
Overall Record: 4-5
Conference Record: 2-4

Big-10 Conference

bigten.com & ncaa.com

1.) #2 Ohio State Buckeyes
Overall Record: 9-0
Conference Record: 6-0
Bottom Line: Yet another blowout for the Buckeyes as their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd sting teams take out Maryland 73-14. Heisman candidate QB Justin Fields threw for an impressive 200 yards and 3 touchdowns and rushed for a touchdown…in just the first half. RB Master Teague III rushed for 111 yards and RB J.K. Dobbins rushed for 90 yards and 2 touchdowns. The Buckeyes put up 10 touchdowns altogether (Fields- 4, Chugunov- 1, Dobbins- 2, Crowley- 1, McCall- 2). With, what should be an easy game coming up against Rutgers, the Buckeyes are looking ahead to their games against Penn State and Michigan in the coming weeks.

2.) #8 Minnesota Golden Gophers
Overall Record: 9-0
Conference Record: 6-0
Bottom Line: Finally getting their much need staple win against a top-ranked team, Minnesota moved up into the top-10 for the first time this year. Beating Penn State in a hotly contested game, 31-26, they now have a date with destiny if they can win-out and win the Big-10 Championship against either Ohio State or Penn State. They will be led by their Sophomore QB, Tanner Morgan, who had a whopping 339 yards and 3 touchdowns against a decent Penn State defense. They get another chance to pick up a win against a ranked opponent as they travel to Iowa to face the Hawkeyes later this week. Can they keep their Cinderella story alive?

3.) #9 Penn State Nittany Lions
Overall Record: 8-1
Conference Record: 5-1
Bottom Line: Worst case scenario for any Penn State fan has happened…their team lost late into the season. But Penn State fans don’t need to completely be in the dumps as their team still has a shot to get back into the playoff picture. They face an AP/Coaches poll ranked Indiana team this week and #2 Ohio State next week. If they can hold off Indiana and pick up an upset against Ohio State, they would be thrust into the Big-10 Championship game against Minnesota for a rematch. So have no fear Nittany Lion fans, you’re team isn’t completely out of it yet.

1.) #6 Oregon Ducks
Overall Record: 8-1
Conference Record: 6-0
Bottom Line: Having a bye-week this past week certainly would help in the long run. Having your players 100% going into the final weeks of the regular season is a perfect setup to finally make it into the top-4 by the end. Oregon gets Arizona when they come back, which should be a solid win for the Ducks.

2.) #7 Utah Utes

Conference Record: 5-1

South-Eastern Conference

1.) #1 LSU Tigers
Overall Record: 9-0
Conference Record: 7-0
Bottom Line: Sitting atop of not only the SEC, but now the NCAA, ladies and gentlemen…..LSU! After narrowing out a victory this past week against Alabama in Tuscaloosa (46-41) LSU is locked in for the SEC championship game against either Georgia or Florida. QB Joe Burrow kept racking up his Heisman numbers by throwing 393 yards and 3 touchdowns. RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire rushed for 103 yards while scoring 3 touchdowns in the process. LSU isn’t quite out of the water yet, they still must face Ole Miss, Arkansas, and Texas A&M, but one’s got to wonder…with how LSU has been playing, do these teams even have a chance to keep these games close?

2.) #4 Georgia Bulldogs
Overall Record: 8-1
Conference Record: 5-1
Bottom Line: Breezing by Missouri (27-0), Georgia now sits within the top-4 in the country and holding a playoff spot. QB Jake Fromm threw for 173 yards and 2 touchdowns against a weakened Tiger defense. The Bulldogs aren’t entirely out of the woods yet as they must face #12 Auburn this coming week, with the game being away. Other than that game, Georgia has a relatively easy schedule (vs. Texas A&M and @Georgia Tech) to finish the regular season en route to the SEC Championship game.

3.) #5 Alabama Crimson Tide
Overall Record: 8-1
Conference Record: 5-1
Bottom Line: The headlines are all the same. Was that the nail in the coffin for Alabama’s playoff hopes? Can Alabama make it back into the playoffs without an SEC title game bid? After losing to LSU 46-41, Alabama’s last few opponents are as followed: @Mississippi State, vs. Western Carolina, and finally @Auburn for the Iron Bowl. With that being said, the odds for Alabama to make it into the playoffs, even if they do win out, are slim to none. Would a 1-loss, no conference championship team make it in rather than the SEC champ, the PAC-12 champ, or another Big-10 champ? No. Alabama’s hopes and dream lie upon LSU losing two of their final three games if they want to make it back into the fold.
