The time has come! One more race is left to decide the 2019 NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series Champion. Four drivers have survived the Playoffs and will compete for the championship this weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Let’s take a quick look at the four contenders and how they stack up against each other:

Brett Moffit

(GMS Racing)

Team: GMS Racing

Manufacturer: Chevrolet

Wins: 4 (Iowa, Chicago, Bristol, Canadian Tire Motorsport Park)

Defending Gander Outdoors Truck Series champion Brett Moffit has done what he needed to do to defend his championship, totaling four wins in 2019 after taking six in 2018. One of those wins last season came at Homestead-Miami Speedway, so the GMS Racing driver knows how to win it all. While the win came with Hattori Racing Enterprises (HRE) last season, Moffit has proven even with a different team, he can still compete for the championship as he did a year ago. Will he repeat?

Ross Chastain

(Derik Hamilton – Associated Press)

Team: Niece Motorsports

Manufacturer: Chevrolet

Wins: 3 (Kansas, Gateway, Pocono)

The “Watermelon Man” Ross Chastain has taken his Niece Motorsports team to new heights in 2019 as he secured the teams first win at Kansas early in the season. His three wins this season sits at second best on the season behind Brett Moffit and his average finish is an 8.8 heading into Homestead-Miami Speedway. Last year at Homestead, Chastain finished an unimpressive 16th place finish, but rolls into Homstead gunning to smash a watermelon in victory lane as the 2019 champion.

Stewart Friesen

(Associated Press)

Team: Halmar Friesen Racing

Manufacturer: Chevrolet

Wins: 2 (Eldora, ISM Raceway)

Stewart Friesen has had a breakout season in 2019, gaining two wins on the season including the Eldora Dirt Dirby. While being no stranger to winning on dirt, Friesen has shown throughout the years that he can run up front with the best trucks and teams in the series. Posting a series best average finish of 8.4 per race, Friesen has claimed 12 top fives and 16 top tens to go along with his two race wins. Riding the wave of momentum after his win at ISM Raceway, Friesen will look to prove that a dirt modified driver can move to the truck series and win the championship.

Matt Crafton

Team: ThorSport

Manufacturer: Ford

Wins: None

Matt Crafton, who has won the Gander Outdoors Truck Series Championship before, has had another typical season compared to his previous ones. Entering the Championship 4 with zero (that’s right, zero) wins on the season, Crafton has been the definition of consistency throughout the 2019 season. That consistency has brought the veteran back into the Championship 4 fold, as he enters Homestead-Miami as one of two former champions. With an average finish of 9.1, coupled with 6 top fives and 17 top tens, Crafton was able to reach the Championship 4 purely on that consistency. Can Crafton match his 2013 and 2014 championship seasons?

PREDICTION

Your 2019 NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series Champion will be….

(Halmar Friesen Racing)

Stewart Friesen!

It’s Friesen’s year, and he will prove that at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Over the past eight races, Friesen’s worst finish came at Las Vegas where he finished 19th. Minus a DNF at Pocono where he finished 32nd, Friesen hasn’t finished outside of the top 20 during the entire 2019 season. The Halmar Friesen Racing team has prepared fantastic trucks for Friesen all season, and Homestead-Miami will be no different. His consistent performances have led me to believe Friesen will be the champion.
