According to MLB Insider’s Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan), the San Diego Padres and Jayce Tingler have decided that Tingler is the right man for the helm in the 2020 season.

Drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 10th round of the Amateur Draft in 2003, Tingler played 4 seasons in different minor leagues until 2007 where he became head coach of the Dominican Summer League Rangers until 2009. Finishing first in both 2008 and 2009. In 2010 he was promoted to Manager of the Rookie-Level Arizona League – Arizona Rangers – where he also led the team to first place.

Shortly after, he was promoted within the Rangers organization to Coordinator of Instruction of Arizona and Dominican Operations in 2011. Then moved again to Minor League Field Coordinator from 2012-2014.

In 2015 he took on the role of Major League Field Coordinator under the Helm of Jeff Banister. Until 2016 when he was given another role as one of three Assistant General Managers when Thad Levine move to the Minnesota Twins.

When Banister was released from his duties in 2018, the Rangers needed a Interim Bench Coach as positions were shuffled, and of course who else to move but our friend, Jayce Tingler. He stayed in that role for the remainder of the 2018 regular season (10 games), until interviewing for the opening Manager position at the years’ conclusion.

The Smithville, MO native did not get the position, however, he was yet again shuffled into a new, old, role as Major League Player Development Field Coordinator (say that ten times fast), for the 2019 season.

All of this history brings us to now. October 24, 2019. Years of commitment. Proving his abilities as a manager in rookie and minor leagues. Proving his ability to develop players. Showing he is a true team player, who just wants to be involved in the game and help teams win, Jayce Tingler has been named the 2020 Manager for the San Diego Padres. It’s almost heart breaking he never got the chance to do so with the Texas Rangers, but, maybe that will add a little fuel to his fire to prove he would have been a great choice.
