College Football Conference Power Rankings: Week 8 (10/17-10/19)

Nearly matching the amount of top-25 teams to lose as last week, week 8 saw six teams, vying to increase their ranking positions, get taken down…three, of which, saw themselves get beat by unranked opponents. This week also saw one of the top quarterbacks (Tua Tagovailoa), in the FBS, go down with an ankle injury. With the middle of the season and the tougher of the schedules for most teams looming, which teams will manage to overcome the adversity that is to surely come? With that in mind, here is your College Football Power Rankings by Conference at the end of week 8:

American Athletic Conference

ncaa.com & bigonsports.com

1.) #16 SMU Mustangs
Overall Record: 7-0
Conference Record: 3-0
Last Week Position: Stayed at #1
Bottom Line: It has been lights-out action for this SMU offense thus far this season. Junior QB Shane Buechele set career highs this week with six touchdowns and a whopping 457 yards through the air, leading SMU improving to 7-0 on the season and moving up the top-25 rankings. With a lack luster Houston team being their next opponent, look for the Mustangs to keep on improving on their record season moving forward.

2.) #18 Cincinnati Bearcats
Overall Record: 6-1
Conference Record: 3-0
Last Week Position: Stayed at #2
Bottom Line: That’s now five wins in-a-row since getting shutout by the Buckeyes in week 2, for Cincy. Being the sole leader for the AAC East division, the Bearcats’ season looks like it’s going to continue to be a thrilling one, especially with push-over teams coming up the next two weeks for them (at ECU and home against UConn).

3.) Memphis Tigers
Overall Record: 6-1
Conference Record: 2-1
Last Week Position: Moved up from #5

4.) Navy Midshipmen

Atlantic Coast Conference

myfantasysportstalk.com & ncaa.com

1.) #4 Clemson Tigers
Overall Record: 7-0
Conference Record: 5-0
Last Week Position: Stayed #1
Bottom Line: Not having a challenging schedule is finally starting to catch up to Clemson. Despite winning handedly against Louisville, the Tigers saw their ranking drop by one in the top-25 (moving from #3 to #4). While other teams in the top-10 are playing either ranked teams or tough conference match-ups, Clemson doesn’t have the same type of competition coming from their fellow ACC teams. QB Trevor Lawrence also continues to make costly mistakes with throwing the ball as he threw two interceptions against a defense that’s mediocre at best. Can the Tigers pull a rabbit out of the magic hat and avoid getting jumped in the rankings by the likes of teams such as Oklahoma, Penn State, Notre Dame, or Florida? At this point, it’s tough saying, but the odds are definitely not in Clemson corner going forward.

2.) Pittsburgh Panthers
Overall Record: 4-2
Conference Record: 2-1
Last Week Position: Moved up from #3
Bottom Line: Moving to 5-2 on the year, the Panthers are keeping up with division rival Virginia when it comes to winning the ACC Coastal. Both teams are 5-2 and look more evenly matched than their week 1 match-up showed (Virginia one 30-14). Junior QB Kenny Pickett threw for 232 yards and two touchdowns and fellow Junior A.J. Davis rushed for a fantastic 103 yards and scored a touchdown. With Miami coming to Pittsburgh this weekend, Pitt is looking to prove that they deserve to be on top of the ACC Coastal division over Virginia.

3.) #25 Wake Forest Demon Deacons
Overall Record: 6-1
Conference Record: 2-1
Last Week Position: Moved up from #5
Bottom Line: Welcome back to the top-25 Wake Forest, long time no see! After narrowly defeating Florida State (22-20), Wake Forest is back in the rankings, sitting at #25. Being the only other ranked team in the ACC, aside from Clemson, the Demon Deacons are looking to stay this time around and not get tossed out. The last half of their schedule looks semi-favorable for them as they face NC State, Duke, and Syracuse, but must also fave a feisty Virginia Tech team and a top-ranked Clemson team…both being away games. If Wake Forest only loses one more game this season, they may be able to stay ranked, but they can’t afford to lose not a single game more. Junior QB Jamie Newman will lead that charge as he has been announced as the starter going forward. With 1772 yards and 17 touchdowns under his belt this year, he looks more then capable to take the lead spot for the back-half of the season.

4.) Virginia Cavaliers
Overall Record: 5-2
Conference Record: 3-1
Last Week Position: Moved up from #8

5.) Virginia Tech Hokies
Overall Record: 5-2
Conference Record: 2-2
Last Week Position: Moved up from #9

6.) Duke Blue Devils
Overall Record: 4-3
Conference Record: 2-2
Last Week Position: Moved down from #4

7.) North Carolina Tar Heels
Overall Record: 3-4
Conference Record: 2-2
Last Week Position: Moved down from #3

8.) Louisville Cardinals
Overall Record: 4-3
Conference Record: 2-2
Last Week Position: Moved down from #6

9.) Miami Hurricanes
Overall Record: 3-4
Conference Record: 1-3
Last Week Position: Moved down from #7

10.) Florida State Seminoles
Overall Record: 3-4
Conference Record: 2-3
Last Week Position: Stayed #10

11.) Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
Overall Record: 2-5
Conference Record: 1-3
Last Week Position: Moved up from #14

12.) Boston College Eagles
Overall Record: 4-3
Conference Record: 2-2
Last Week Position: Stayed #12

13.) NC State Wolfpack
Overall Record: 4-3
Conference Record: 1-2
Last Week Position: Moved down from #11

14.) Syracuse Orange
Overall Record: 3-4
Conference Record: 0-3
Last Week Position: Moved down from #13

Big-12 Conference

downtownkc.org & ncaa.com

1.) #5 Oklahoma Sooners
Overall Record: 7-0
Conference Record: 4-0
Last Week Position: Stayed #1
Bottom Line: Jalen Hurts and Oklahoma get their 7th win of the season as they stay undefeated and tied atop the Big-12 with Baylor. QB Jalen Hurts had another Heisman-type day throwing 16-17, 316 yards, and 3 touchdowns along with 75 yards rushing and 2 rushing touchdowns. Oklahoma has continued to look dominant this season, but one could argue that they haven’t necessarily played a top-ranked defense this season. The strongest D they’ve faced, was a Texas defense that’s been trying to pick-up all the broken pieces they seem to be losing. Kansas, Texas Tech, UCLA, Houston, and….South Dakota….have been the other teams that they’ve faced, but none of which have an above average defense, let alone a top-ranked D they could even come close to holding the high powered offense of Oklahoma. Now the Sooners do play two other top-25 teams this season (Iowa State and Baylor), which could provide a little bit more of a competition, but without facing a top defense yet, Oklahoma is still unproven. They travel to Kansas State this weekend.

2.) #14 Baylor Bears
Overall Record: 7-0
Conference Record: 4-0
Last Week Position: Stayed #2
Bottom Line: Perhaps one of the bigger surprises this year, is the fact that Baylor is an undefeated, top-15 ranked team at this stage of the season. They beat Iowa State, who is now ranked in the top-25, and an Oklahoma State team that’s been pesky towards other conference teams. With a date with West Virginia next weekend after the bye-week, Junior QB Charlie Brewer will look to keep padding his stats like he did in the game against Oklahoma State (threw for 13-17, 312 yards, and a touchdown). He’ll have help from his RB, Jamycal Hasty, who rushed for 146 yards and two touchdowns in the game against the Cowboys.

3.) #23 Iowa State Cyclones
Overall Record: 5-2
Conference Record: 3-1
Last Week Position: Stayed #3

4.) #15 Texas Longhorns
Overall Record: 5-2
Conference Record: 3-1
Last Week Position: Stayed #4

5.) Kansas State Wildcats
Overall Record: 4-2
Conference Record: 1-2
Last Week Position: Moved up from #6

6.) Oklahoma State Cowboys
Overall Record: 4-3
Conference Record: 1-3
Last Week Position: Moved down from #5

7.) Texas Tech Red Raiders
Overall Record: 3-4
Conference Record: 1-3
Last Week Position: Stayed #7

8.) West Virginia Mountaineers
Overall Record: 3-4
Conference Record: 1-3
Last Week Position: Stayed #8

9.) Kansas Jayhawks
Overall Record: 2-5
Conference Record: 0-4
Last Week Position: Moved up from #10

10.) TCU Horned Frogs
Overall Record: 3-3
Conference Record: 1-2
Last Week Position: Moved down from #9

Big-10 Conference

bigten.com & ncaa.com

1.) #3 Ohio State Buckeyes
Overall Record: 7-0
Conference Record: 4-0
Last Week Position: Stayed #1
Bottom Line: Looks like the bye-week didn’t stop the Buckeyes momentum thus far in the season. Smashing Northwestern, 52-3, Ohio State now has a date with destiny against Wisconsin this coming weekend. The Badgers fell up short against Illinois this past week, but still found themselves in the hunt for a Big-10 Championship bid later this year. Ohio State looks to put an old dog out to pasture and put the final nail in the coffin for Wisconsin’s hopes and dreams for this season. Sophomore QB Justin Fields will certainly keep his Heisman candidacy increasing in stature, just as he did against the Wildcats as he threw for 194 yards and 4 touchdowns. J.K. Dobbins rushed for 121 yards and a touchdown as well. If Ohio State can do as Illinois did and stop Heisman candidate RB Jonathon Taylor from gaining much ground and momentum, the Buckeyes can look to come out on top in this top-25 match-up.

2.) #6 Penn State Nittany Lions
Overall Record: 7-0
Conference Record: 4-0
Last Week Position: Moved up from #3
Bottom Line: That’s two top-25 match-up victories in-a-row for the Nittany Lions as they took care of Michigan, 28-21. QB Sean Clifford was lights-out throwing for 182 yards and racking up 3 touchdowns. Sophomore WR K.J. Hamler caught two of those touchdowns and put up 108 yards receiving in the act. Penn State gets rival Michigan State this week and then go up against undefeated Minnesota the following week.

3.) #17 Minnesota Golden Gophers
Overall Record: 7-0
Conference Record: 4-0
Last Week Position: Moved up from #5
Bottom Line: If somebody told you that Minnesota was going to be undefeated through 8 weeks, would you have believed them? What about if they also told you that they’d be ranked in the top-20? Or if they would manage to have on of the top-3 teams in the Big-10? Odds are you’d laugh at that person for the stupidity that came out of their mouths. But they’d be getting the last laugh as all of those things that they said…came true. Minnesota is a shock to most college football fans, especially the Big-10 ones. They haven’t went up against a top-25 team yet, but will in two weeks when they host Penn State. But until then, the Golden Gophers host Maryland. Led by Sophomore QB Tanner Morgan (15-28, 245 yards, and 2 TDs against Rutgers) and Senior RB Rodney Smith (19 carries, 111 yards, and 2 TDs against Rutgers), Minnesota is looking to prove all the doubters wrong this half of the season as they will host teams such as Maryland, Penn State, and Wisconsin and travel to Iowa and Northwestern…three of which are top-25 teams.

4.) #20 Iowa Hawkeyes
Overall Record: 5-2
Conference Record: 2-2
Last Week Position: Moved up from #6

5.) #13 Wisconsin Badgers
Overall Record: 6-1

Last Week Position: Stayed #1
Bottom Line: UAB is pushing to have this year be their best year ever as they beat Old Dominion 38-14. Freshman RB Jermaine Brown Jr. rushed for 116 yards and a touchdown and will look to keep his momentum going forward into the bye-week and beyond as the Blazers get ready to host Tennessee in a couple weeks.

1.) Central Michigan Chippewas
Overall Record: 5-3
Conference Record: 3-1
Last Week Position: Stayed #1
Bottom Line: Picking up a win against Bowling Green, 38-20, the Chippewas are now sitting in a lone 2nd place in the MAC right behind Ball State. Leaning on their running game more often in the past couple weeks, Central Michigan will certainly look to do the same thing when they take on conference rival Buffalo, while being led by Chippewas Senior RB Jonathon Ward (21 carries, 130 yards, and 3 TDs).

2.) Eastern Michigan Eagles
Overall Record: 4-3
Conference Record: 1-2

Mountain-West Conference

college-sports-journal.com & ncaa.com

1.) San Diego State Aztecs
Overall Record: 6-1
Conference Record: 3-1
Last Week Position: Moved up from #1
Bottom Line: Picking up a solid win against San Jose State, the Aztecs are looking to become the sole leader for the entire Mountain West Conference…especially with Boise State falling to BYU. To San Diego, everybody from top news outlets, fans, and all in-between have treated them as second rate for teams coming out of the MWC only behind Boise State, but now is the time for the Aztecs to finally take the lead and become #1 in their conference. First they have a date set against UNLV this weekend.

2.) #22 Boise State Broncos
Overall Record: 6-1
Conference Record: 3-0
Last Week Position: Moved down from #1
Bottom Line: Annnnnnd there goes the chances of the Mountain West to make a playoff bid…once again. Boise State fell to sever underdog BYU 28-25. For the first three quarters, BYU was winning in every aspect, but a late 4th quarter surge saw the Broncos come within 3 points of tying the game up. With an incredible stop on 3rd down with less than a minute to go, BYU sealed the game and upset the #14 team. Boise State QB Chase Cord didn’t help matters as he threw two interceptions during the bout. The Broncos get time to figure things out as they get a bye-week this week before they go up against San Jose State in week 10.

Pac-12 Conference

pac-12.com & ncaa.com

1.) #11 Oregon Ducks
Overall Record: 6-1
Conference Record: 4-0
Last Week Position: Stayed #1
Bottom Line: Picking up a suitable win against, previously ranked, Washington team, Oregon remains atop the PAC-12 and is still seeking a playoff bid…a place they haven’t been since the beginning of the playoff-era when they were beat by Ohio State in the finals. Senior QB Justin Herbert led the comeback against the Huskies as he threw for 24-38, 280 yards, and 4 TDs. He needs to continue to lead his team into the final games of the season if they want a chance to push for the playoffs. They will first face Washington State.

2.) #12 Utah Utes
Overall Record: 6-1
Conference Record: 3-1
Last Week Position: Stayed #2
Bottom Line: Following close behind Oregon, and fighting as well for a bid into the playoffs, Utah beat Arizona State 21-3. Senior RB Zack Moss became the all-time rusher in Utah history with a career 3264 rushing yards so far and he still has more opportunity to make it higher as there’s still more games to be played. They will face California this weekend.

South-Eastern Conference

thesecu.com & ncaa.com

1.) #2 LSU Tigers
Overall Record: 7-0
Conference Record: 3-0
Last Week Position: Stayed #1
Bottom Line: It was an unranked victory for the LSU Tigers this past week as they beat Mississippi State 36-13. Heisman Senior QB Joe Burrow was the star once again as he threw for 25-32, 327 yards, and 4 TDs. This brings his season stats to 2484 yards, 29 TDs, 3 interceptions, and an impressive 93.3 QB rating. LSU gets another top-10 opponent this week as they face #9 Auburn. If LSU pulls off the win, it’ll be their third top-10 win so far this season and they would still have another in two weeks against Alabama.

2.) #1 Alabama Crimson Tide
Overall Record: 7-0
Conference Record: 4-0
Last Week Position: Stayed #2
Bottom Line: There’s yet another unranked win for the, still, unproven Crimson Tide as they beat Tennessee 35-13. With the unfortunate injury to star QB Tua Tagovailoa, Alabama moves forward as they face Arkansas next week. Back-up QB Sophomore Mac Jones will get the start. He threw for 6-11 and 72 yards in the small amount of time he got under center. But reports indicate that Tua will be out for multiple weeks, which, if true, will be a potential detriment as they will have to face #2 LSU without their star QB.

3.) #9 Auburn Tigers
Overall Record: 6-1
Conference Record: 3-1
Last Week Position: Stayed #3
Bottom Line: The Tigers picked up an easy win against a overwhelmed Arkansas 51-10. Before the 2nd and 3rd strings got a chance to play, Freshman QB Bo Nix threw for 12-17, 176 yards, and 3 TDs. Auburn gets an opportunity to prove that they deserve to be in the top-10 as they face #2 LSU in Louisiana.

1.) #21 Appalachian State Mountaineers
Overall Record: 6-0
Conference Record: 3-0
Last Week Position: Stayed #1
Bottom Line: Being the sole Sun Belt team within the top-25, the Mountaineers picked up their 6th win, as they stay undefeated blowing out UL Monroe 52-7. Junior QB Zac Thomas threw for 18-30, 214 yards, 3 TDs, but also an interception. Junior RB Darrynton Evans also rushed for 136 yards and a touchdown as well. Last Week Position: Stayed #10

Predictions for Week 9:

1.) None of the remaining undefeated teams left (Ohio State, LSU, Minnesota, Clemson, Alabama, Penn State, Appalachian State, SMU, and Oklahoma) will be beaten this week.

2.) Notre Dame will win a very close match against Michigan 38-31. Michigan will then drop out of the top-25.

3.) Oregon or Utah will be beaten. Not both, but definitely one.

4.) Auburn will give LSU everything they got, but Senior QB Joe Burrow will lead LSU to victory, beating Auburn by 10+ points.
