Purse: $11,000,000

Potential FedEx Cup Points: 600

First Official Tee Time: Thursday, April 11th at 8:30AM

Welcome to the 2019 Masters Tournament, one of the most prestigious legs on the PGA Tour. The season of Spring has arrived and with it so has the first Major PGA Tour championship of the year. Situated at the beginning of April, the tournament is held (as it always is) in Augusta, Georgia at the Augusta National Golf Club, for which the event was originally named.

A Very Brief History

Art Credit: Linda Hartough

The Masters was established in the year 1934 and has long persevered over its eighty-five-year history. However, the event was originally known as the Augusta National Invitational. Not long after its inception, the tradition of awarding the winner with a green jacket was instituted, in addition to the accolades and monetary prizes. If the green jacket can bring forth memories of former winners, then names like Magnolia and Dogwood can bring forth memories of the course. Each hole has the name of a various plant, which is associated with the nursery that stood where Augusta National now stands today. But as rich as the history of this event is, there are a multitude of exciting things happening in the present.

2019 Event Details

The Masters begins on Thursday, April 11th at 8:15 AM with the Honorary starters of Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus. The event is set to conclude on Sunday, April 14th. As stated above, the purse for this event is $11,000,000 with $1,980,000 going directly to the winner. The players also have the best chance to improve their world golf standings with 100 points going to the winner. Not to mention, the champion will receive a variety of PGA Tour exemptions to future events and a lifetime invitation to the Masters.

The Legendary Field

The field this year is comprised of 87 golfers who are no doubt, some of the best in the world. Traditionally, the event field would contain closer to 100 golfers. The Masters is one of the hardest tournaments to qualify for, as there are only so many feats that can get you in. At the top of this list, is the qualification of previous Masters Tournament Champions. We have nineteen former champions in the event this year. Some of the most well-known names are: Jordan Spieth, Bubba Watson, Tiger Woods, Sergio Garcia, Phil Michelson, Adam Scott, Patrick Reed, Zack Johnson, Fred Couples, and Bernhard Langer. Of these names Watson has won the event twice, Michelson three times and Tiger four. Tiger Woods is only two wins away from Jack Nicklaus’ record of six wins and these men are two of only three golfers to ever win the event back to back. Woods and Spieth are tied for owning the lowest winning score in tournament history at 18 under. While Zack Johnson owns the best record for the highest winning score in tournament history at 1 over. I had to include Bernhard Langer out of respect, he is the first in this field to win at Augusta back in 1985.
