Serena Williams, ranked the number 16 player in the world, fell to Karolina Plíšková, the number 7 ranked player in the world, in three sets. Plíšková won the first set 6-4, the next set Serena came roaring back and won it 6-4. The third set Pliskova was able to pull the win out and won the set 7-5.
Williams was up 5-1 on the last set and held four match points. She then rolled her ankle in the match but later told the media it had nothing to do with her ankle as she was still aggressive when playing. Williams has competed in four major tournaments recently and has lost in two championships, the quarterfinals, and she also withdrew from one.
Karolina Plíšková will face Naomi Osaka in the semifinals today, January 23rd, at 11:30 pm EST. Osaka beat Williams in the U.S. Open Championship last year to win her first major. The game will air on ESPN2.
