This year the ECHL partnered with Nickelodeon for a “Nickelodeon Takeover Experience” for 26 home games for various teams. Teams were able to choose from Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Spongebob Squarepants, PAW Patrol, and NickSplat. The Wheeling Nailers chose Spongebob Squarepants and wore Spongebob Jerseys with the Indy Fuel coming to town wearing Mr. Krabs jerseys.
The Fuel were able to start out putting pressure on the Nailers outshooting them 4-0 in the first 10 minutes. Matt O’Connor was able to stop all 4 for the Nailers. Troy Josephs finally got the first shot for the Nailers at the 9:48 mark of the 1st period. It would remain even the rest of the period as the score was deadlocked at 0.
The Fuel started the scoring 17 seconds in to the 2nd, as Brett Welychka would wrist it right over O’Connor’s glove. But it would only take the Nailers only 30 seconds to tie it up as Zac Lynch would tip Yushiroh Hirano’s rebound in the net past Indy Netmidner Jason Pawlowski. 18 minutes late the Nailers newest signing, Alec Butcher, got his own rebound to go off Pawlowski’s shoulder and into the net. That was Butcher’s first professional goal in his first professional game. The Indy Fuel got a puck in the net 2 minutes later, but lucky for the Nailers the clock read all zeros to end the 2nd.
The Fuel were able to tie the game at 2 at the 13:31 mark of the 3rd after Logan Nelson was able to get the puck past O’Connor. But The Nailers were able to answer quickly as Craig Skudalski was able to put Hirano’s rebound right past Pawloski 23 seconds later to make it 3-2.
The Nailers were able to break a streak where the team scoring first won. That streak was at 18 games. They improved to 18-16-2 on the season and play the Indy Fuel tomorrow at 3:05.
