The world is in shock after Dabo Sweeney’s Clemson Tigers dominated Nick Saban’s Alabama Crimson Tide after winning 44-16 in Monday night’s matchup.
Coming in as the underdog, the Tigers exploded at the beginning of the game. The true freshman Trevor Lawrence had the game of his life, engineering his team to victory. The 19-year old looked like a Heisman winner throwing for 347 yards and 3 touchdowns on the big stage. Lawrence is already expected to be an elite player years down the road.
Clemson’s offense was spectacular with the Lawrence/Ross duo as the big highlight. Justyn Ross was able to haul in 153 yards and 1 touchdown. Running back Trevor Etienne also contributed with 86 yards and 2 touchdowns. The Tiger’s offense put on a display of perfection in the biggest game of the year.
The Clemson defense was able to hold one of the most dangerous offenses in national football to only sixteen points. Tua Tagovailoa was pressured by the Tiger’s strong defensive line, forcing him to throw two interceptions, one being a pick-six.
Clemson showed the nation they were more prepared for this game than Alabama. However, this cannot take away the memorable season the Tide had, led by Tagovailoa and the explosive offense. The Heisman finalist had what many people believe to be one of the best seasons of any Alabama quarterback in years. Unfortunately, the Crimson Tide phenom was not able to end the season on a high note.
This may be one of the most disappointing losses in Saban’s career. After the game, Saban stated, “I never really got comfortable with what we needed to do to win this game… One game doesn’t define who you are.” For one of the greatest coaches to ever set foot on a football field, this game will not hinder his legacy.
What an exciting finish to an exhilarating year in college football. Going into the offseason, Clemson and Alabama will ride the top of the rankings at the beginning of next season.
