The baseball community comes together this evening amidst a competitive off-season as news has come out that Luis Valbuena and Jose Castillo have perished in a car accident in Venezuela.
The former Los Angeles Angels infielder and Pittsburgh Pirates infielder, respectively, both passed away as their vehicle struck a rock on their way home after a winter ball game where the two were teammates. Carlos Rivera, who had a brief stint in the Majors with the Diamondbacks in 2014 was the driver of the vehicle, who did end up surviving after their vehicle hit a rock and was thrown off the road.
Valbuena made his debut in 2008 where he played for the Seattle Mariners. Throughout his 11-year career he played with the Cleveland Indians, Chicago Cubs, and Houston Astros, finally joining the Angels for the 2018 season. After their run was completed in August Valbuena entered free agency.
Castillo made his debut in 2004 where he played his first four seasons with the Pirates, and finished his Major League tenure with the San Francisco Giants and Houston Astros. Most recently, Castillo has been playing professional baseball in Japan.
Here at The Game Changer Sports Network we would like to send our condolences to the family, friends, and peers of Valbuena and Castillo.
