It’s pretty clear that now former Arizona Diamondbacks Starting Pitcher Patrick Corbin is the number one pitching target on the market this offseason. That’s with good reason too.
The Arizona ace finished the 2018 campaign with a final record of 11-7. He had an era of 3.15 with 246 strikeouts in 200 innings. The year ended with his WAR at 4.8.
Corbin spent yesterday visiting with the Philadelphia Phillies. It was confirmed that he was inside their park. The Phillies have been making a strong case for SP in the free agent market over he last few years.
Last year they went out and grabbed SP Jake Arrieta on the open market. The Phillies look like a team who are a few key pieces away from a playoff birth. Step one to that process would be getting a sure fire ace.
The Phillies had the fewest hits in the MLB in 2018. Starting Pitching should not be on their priority list this offseason. Yet here we are talking about it as he’s visiting them.
Corbin still has a visit with the New York Yankees. The Yankees have some wiggle room with their money so expect them to offer up more money than the Phillies.
If Corbin is signed by either the Yankees or Phillies, expect that team to use him as a piece of their sales pitch to go after Bryce Harper. Harper wants to go to a team and win a title, as I said above, the Phillies are a few pieces out, but both Corbin and Harper could send them in the right direction.
