We can sit here and debate who should start for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the rest of the season. The reality is that it doesn’t get us anywhere. We all believe who we believe should be starting, wether it be Jameis Winston or Ryan Fitzpatrick.
It’s not exactly like Fitzpatrick is new to the game. He has made his way around the block. He’s seen time on St. Louis, Cincinnati, Buffalo, Houston, Tennessee, and the New York Jets before finally coming into his own as a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Let’s not sit here and pretend like the only reason he got this chance wasn’t because of the Winston suspension at the start of this season. “Fitzmagic” would never be a thing if not for Winston getting that suspension. The question is now, what made this team better than any other team he’s been the leader of?
Outside of the New York Jets in 2015, Fitzpatrick has never led a team to a winning season. Once referred to as “a poor teams Tom Brady” you never really saw that strike through. He was a normal average to below average kind of guy.
Only eight times in his career has he started over ten games. To put that into perspective, he is currently in his 14th season in the league. He’s never been the superstar kind of guy. This year has been out of the ordinary for him.
In the first three games this season he threw the ball for over 1,200 yards. He threw 11 touchdowns in the same amount of time. He clearly had the hot hand. Then Winston came back and the team went with him. It’s been all downhill from there.
The huge difference this year for him has been the talent around him. An average Quarterback can only be as good as the guys placed near him. Let’s take a look at that 2015 New York Jets team to compare.
WR’s Mike Evans and Deshaun Jackson lead the way for Tampa Bay this season. Back in 2015, with a record of 10-6 he was tossing the rock to Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker who were both in their final good years. It’s only three years later and neither player is on a team at this point. Looking back at 2012’s buffalo roster, we have Stevie Johnson and T.J. Graham.
This is the first time he has had elite players all around him. He has the QB consistency to continue to lead this type of team to wins. When a average QB has good weapons, the team wins. Look at Joe Flacco in Baltimore.
Fitzpatrick has once again been named starter this week over Winston. Watch as the magic continues to roll.
