The Pittsburgh Penguins started out the season with poor goaltending giving up 11 goals in 2 games. Matt Murray was out with a concussion, which led to Casey DeSmith getting his first start of the season. DeSmith would give up a beautiful backhand goal by Tomas Nosek, his first of the season at 6:28 in the first. John Marchessault and William Karlsson had the assists. A minute and 35 seconds later Evegeni Malkin would win a faceoff to Phil Kessel, who would wrist shot it past Malcom Subban. Those would be the only goals scored in the first.
The 2nd period is where a lot of action occurred. It all started at the 9:37 mark. Malkin would end up passing the puck to Kessel, who got a breakaway and snapped the puck right over Subban’s glove to make it 2-1. 6 minutes later Kessel would have another breakaway. He took a wrist shot and got right past Subban’s glove for the 3rd time of the night to give him the Natural Hat Trick. Jake Guentzel would score the last goal of the 2nd period 57 seconds later to make 4-1.
The 3rd period showed both teams getting a lot of good opportunities in the first 10 minutes. Riley Smith would finally beat DeSmith at the 13:35 mark of the 3rd period. That would be the only goal of the 3rd period. DeSmith had 35 saves for the win, while Subban had 18 for the loss. Penguins are now 2-1 on the season, while the Golden Knights fall to 1-4.
