J.D. Martinez leads all of baseball in two of the three Triple Crown categories. Not just in the AL but in all of baseball. The third category, batting average, belongs to his teammate, Mookie Betts. Martinez’s slash line looks like this: .332/.400/.667 – unhuman-like numbers. Not only that, but he has 37 home runs and 104 RBIs, both of which lead the majors.
If the season were to end today, Martinez would no doubt win the AL MVP. Can he get to the coveted Triple Crown though? The feat has only been accomplished once in the last 42 years (ironically in 1966/67, we had back-to-back years with a Triple Crown winner). The last coming in 2012 when Miguel Cabrera won it with a .330 BA, 44 home runs and 139 RBIs.
The big question that remains is: can Martinez catch up to Betts? Or a different question, but similar: will Betts slump a little? The answer to that question is probably not.
Gomez Guess says Martinez will not win the Triple Crown, but man, do I want him to. It has only happened once in my lifetime and I would love to see it again. Betts is batting a mediocre .351 for the year and has 27 home runs of his own to go along with 62 RBIs.
Martinez is a true DH in every sense of the word. His only job is to hit (primarily since he does play the field occasionally), and he does just that. His average exit velocity is 93.5 MPH which is only 2.3 MPH slower than the leader of that category: Aaron Judge. So, this means not only is he hitting the ball well, but he’s hitting it hard as hell.
So here we are with about a month and a half of baseball left wondering if another Triple Crown is possible. Martinez has power, hits for average, and always hits in the clutch with runners on. It must be kind of a bittersweet feeling for Red Sox fans since they want Betts to continue crushing the ball, but also want Martinez to come away with a Triple Crown. Either way, it looks like Martinez is a lock for AL MVP this year.
