As announced by WWE this morning, Renee Young will join Corey Graves and Michael Cole at the Announce Table for the final Monday Night Raw leading into SummerSlam weekend. This will signify the first time that a woman has called an entire episode of Monday Night Raw.
Young has had a major role on WWE TV for some time now, working a number of roles including: handling backstage interviews for both Raw and SmackDown Live, being the former host of SmackDown Live’s “Talking Smack” show, having her own show on the WWE Network, hosting nearly every Pay-Per-View KickOff show, and most recently has taken the lead commentary role for the Mae Young Classic alongside former champion, Beth Phoenix.
In an interview with ESPN, Young described her excitement when she heard the news:
“When Michael told me, I was like, ‘This Monday?! What are you talking about?!’,” Young said. “I am so excited for this opportunity. To be sitting with Cole, who has been such a great champion of mine since I’ve been working for WWE, it’s going to be really cool.”
While it will just be for one Monday Night Raw, as Young is simply covering for Jonathan Coachman, this could be the beginning of a huge shift for women in reporter/interview roles within WWE. Could we see a woman leading commentary for Raw and SmackDown on a daily basis in the future? Who knows!
