The Minnesota Vikings have re-signed wide reciever Stefon Diggs to a five-year contract worth $72 million. The contract has a max salary of $81 million and $40 million guaranteed, as per NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport. Stefon Diggs will earn a base salary of $14.4 million per year, and his extension puts him among the top 10 wide receivers in contract value and average salary.
Diggs reached a career high of 8 touchdowns last season, and will be remembered for the Minneapolis Miracle: Minneapolis Miracle. (Disclaimer for those that are New Orlean Saints fans, clicking on the link will only bring you tears).
Diggs has never broken 1,000 receiving yards, but has also never played 16 games. His career high is 903 receiving yards. Some may question why Diggs was re-signed to a big contract, and the Vikings head office clearly see potential in the 24-year old receiver. With an ever increasing salary cap and player prices, locking up the young receiver to a big deal now could prove fruitful in the long-term, provided Diggs stays healthy.
The 2015 fifth round pick has a career total of 200 receptions, 2,472 receiving yards and 15 TDs. 2015 first round pick Amari Cooper has a career total of 203 receptions, 2,903 receiving yards and 18 TDs. There is not a huge difference between these two player’s stats. For a fifth round pick, Diggs has proven he can be a reliable receiver and he will be looking to finally break 1,000 receiving yards this upcoming season.
