The Tennessee Titans have made Taylor Lewan a very rich man. The left tackle has signed a $80 million, five year extension, per NFL.com. It is an unprecedented contract for an offensive lineman, surpassing Nate Solder’s four year, $62m deal with the Giants this offseason.
Lewan is guaranteed $50m of that $80m, and is set to earn $16m each year. Drafted in 2014, as the 11th overall pick, Lewan has protected Marcus Mariota’s blind side exceptionally well for the last three years. He was set to earn $9.34m in the final year of his rookie contract.
Lewan is a two-time Pro-Bowler, and has youth on his side. His new contract represents a significant investment, especially since fellow lineman Jack Conklin has been ruled out with a knee injury.
It remains to be seen if the high sums being paid to lineman are worthwhile, and Lewan’s deal and performance are sure to be heavily scrutinized should he fail to perform at the highest level in 2018-19 and beyond.
