Ford Chip Ganassi Racing and Paul Miller Racing claimed victories Saturday in the Northeast Grand Prix at Lime Rock Park. Despite a dominant early start by the No. 3 Corvette Racing C7.R, the No. 66 Ford GT was able to win with Joey Hand behind the wheel at the finish.
At the start of the race Antonio Garcia powered his No. 3 Corvette away from the field while starting from the pole position. After leading a majority of the two-hour and 40-minute GT-only contest, the No. 3 was handed over to Jan Magnussen to close out the race. With a half an hour left and driving on worn tires, Magnussen had an of course incident at turn seven which allowed Joey Hand to make the pass for the lead. The No. 912 Porsche GT Team 911 RSR of Laurens Vanthoor and Earl Bamber completed the podium in third.
The win is Ford Chip Ganassi Racing’s third consecutive GTLM victory in the 2018 IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship season with the first coming at Watkins Glen early this month. Joey Hand and Dirk Mueller take the points lead after Lime Rock with a one-point lead over Corvette Racing’s No. 3 driven by Antonio Garcia and Jan Magnussen.
GTD points leaders Paul Miller Racing extended their points lead in dominant fashion on Saturday, which was their second win of the 2018 season. Madison Snow and Bryan Sellers took the Lamborghini Huracan GT3 to a 18.614-second win over the Magnus Racing Audi R8 LMS GT3 of John Potter and Andy Lally.
The No. 58 Wright Motorsports Porsche GT3 led the field to the green with Patrick Long behind the wheel and held the lead for the first hour. The team lost the top spot in the second hour after the first pit stop giving the Paul Miller Racing team the lead which they never relinquished. Katherine Legge lost ground on the Paul Miller Racing duo, but still maintained her second place points position after finishing in fourth with her co-driver, Alvaro Parente. Cooper MacNeil and Gunnar Jeanette rounded out the podium third in their No. 63 Scuderia Corsa Ferrari 488 GT3.
The next round of the 2018 IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship takes place at the Road America in two weeks. The Road America Continental Tire Road Race Showcase will take place August 3rd through 5th.
