In one of wrestling’s most shocking breaking news yet, it has been confirmed that ROH and NJPW will officially be holding a show in Madison Square Garden on April 6, 2019. The show, titled G1 Supercard, will feature both ROH stars and NJPW stars against one another, akin to ROH x NJPW’s Global Wars/War of the Worlds specials.

Already confirmed for the show at this time are NJPW stars Kazuchika Okada, Hiroshi Tanahashi, and Tetsuya Naito, in addition to the ROH wrestlers. The show is heavily considered to include championship matches from both promotions in this card and will be promoted heavily as the date draws near.

This is massive news in the wrestling scene, as the event will be held in Madison Square Garden. MSG, considered to be WWE’s home territory, had originally sent feelers out to different promotions and initially had a deal set with Ring of Honor for a show for April 2019.

That deal fell through, however, when MSG backed out of the date amidst rumors that a WWE top-ranking official had contacted the venue regarding the booking. Ring of Honor had hinted at pursuing legal action regarding this cancellation but it seems that not only will ROH have the date, but they will be bringing NJPW along as well.

“This is a historic initiative for ROH and New Japan Pro-Wrestling. This gives us a great chance to expose fans to NJPW in the building which housed so many memorable and compelling matches.”

NJPW President Harold Meij

NJPW, who was on WWE’s radar, had started their expansion into the American market following a raid on their roster by WWE. That raid led to the signing of Luke Gallows, Karl Anderson, Shinsuke Nakamura and AJ Styles to the WWE, which left NJPW officials bitter and kicked off long-term plans for international expansion.

Initially, NJPW had given indicators that they were testing the waters, with initial shows in California and gradual expansion into the eastern coast. With this new development, NJPW stands to gain major exposure in Madison Square Garden, especially considering the show will be held during Wrestlemania weekend and with an NXT Takeover show happening in the nearby Barclays Arena.

“This is destined to join a long list of historical wrestling moments and where better to hold it than at Madison Square Garden. I am extremely proud of what we have been able to achieve as a company and am very appreciative of how great our relationship with New Japan Pro-Wrestling has become. However, none of this would be possible without our fans, who are truly the best in the world. Madison Square Garden would not be possible without them and for that I am most grateful.”

ROH C.O.O. Joe Koff

Tickets for the show will go on-sale on Wednesday, August 8th for ROH Honor Club members and Friday, August 10th for the general public.
