Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari roared to victory at bitter championship rival Lewis Hamilton’s home track of Silverstone in the UK this weekend.
Hamilton started the race on pole position, but made contact with Kimi Raikkonen on turn three, catapulting him to dead last position. Raikkonen was held responsible for the collision and was handed a 10-second penalty. Raikkonen would go on to finish third.
Hamilton, despite the early collision, was not prepared to go down without a fight. He fought his way back up through the pack and found himself in the top three less than halfway through the race.
Brendon Hartley of Torro Rosso has been in dire straits as of late. His qualifying session was brought to a catastrophic end as his suspension failed spectacularly, destroying his car and forcing him to start his race from the pits. He didn’t even complete a full lap before he was forced to retire from the race. After his ffth DNF this year, it’s anyone’s guess how much longer he will stay at Torro Rosso or indeed in Formula 1.
This weekend proved difficult for the Sauber team, amongst other people, as both Charles Leclerc and Marcus Ericcson found themselves out of the race. Leclerc was released from the pits too early and Ericcson was out due to oversteer on a hairpin and stuffing his car into the tire wall.
Romain Grosjean also had a short race after he made contact with Carlos Sainz of Renault and took him into the gravel. This collision continues Grosjean’s controversial season of spectacular mechanical failures and collisions during races and practice sessions alike.
By the last 10 laps, safety cars had bunched the pack together, and the two Mercedes were fighting wheel-to-wheel with the two Ferraris. Any of the four racers could have won the race, but in the end, Sebastian Vettel had a masterful last-minute overtake on Valtteri Bottas which handed him the win.
The next race takes place at the Hockenheimring in Germany on July 22nd.
