Erik Jones, driver of the No. 20 buytoyota.com Toyota Camry, claimed his first career Monster Energy Cup win at Daytona International Speedway last night in the Coke Zero Sugar 400. Jones beat last year’s cup champion Martin Truex Jr. to the line, followed by AJ Allmendinger.
“How about that race, boys and girls?” Jones shouted to the front stretch fans after his first career win. “My first cup win, my first win at Daytona, my first super speedway win – what an awesome day man!”
The race, which went an extra two overtimes was marred by wrecks that eliminated more than half the field from contention. Ricky Stenhouse Jr., who claimed the first two stage wins of the race, would be at the center of both huge wrecks in stage three eliminating top contenders such as Kyle Busch, Brad Keselowski and Kevin Harvick.
This set the stage for the final restart as the cars at the front battled it out for the win. Jones was able to pass Truex Jr. after gaining a huge run down the back stretch going into turn three of the final laps and was able to maintain that lead to the checkered flag.
Kasey Kahne would finish the race in fourth, which is his best finish of the 2018 cup season, followed by Chris Buescher. The series now heads to Kentucky Speedway for next Sunday’s Quaker State 400.
