Sunday’s race showed just how important pit strategy is. Truex Jr. sacrificed stage points all day long to be ahead when it mattered the most. That is what it takes to be a Monster Energy Cup Series Champion.
This wasn’t just any normal win for Truex. This was one of dominating fashion. He was up on the competition by 20 seconds at times and kept getting faster and faster.
Truex Jr. built his pit strategy all throughout the race, but it really kicked in with a little less than 40 laps to go. As Kevin Harvick came down pit road, Truex Jr. and crew chief Cole Pearn pulled a fast one and stayed out while also claiming the lead.
Kevin Harvick claimed the lead with 27 laps to go after Erik Jones finally went down pit road. Unfortunately for Harvick, this lead didn’t last very long. Clint Bowyer and Truex Jr. were hot on his trail.
Truex took the lead from Kevin Harvick with about 20 laps left and never looked back. While Kevin pitted a few laps later in hopes of a caution, Truex refused to relinquish the lead.
Not only did Truex Jr. never give up the lead, he won by a whopping 10 seconds. He is starting to show just how good he is at these tracks with his 2nd straight road coarse win. Truex now has three wins on the season and I believe he is just getting started.
