Title number 10 at Halle will need to wait till next year for Roger Federer as Borna Coric surprised the Swiss at the Gerry Weber Open 7-6(8-6), 3-6, 6-2 on Sunday.
The first set saw a close battle that ended in a tiebreak with Borna holding his composure to take the tight set.
After losing the second set, handily, Coric came storming back in the third to break Federer twice and end Roger’s 20 grass-court match winning streak with an impressive victory.
With the loss, Federer once again will lose the No. 1 ranking to Nadal. This will be the sixth trading at the pole position this year for the two greats. With only 50 ATP points separating the two, there are plenty of chances to see more swapping as the year goes on.
Nadal will start his 178th week at No. 1 on Monday, June 25th.
It was an impressive tournament all-around for Coric, as he also defeated world No. 3 Alexander Zverev in the first round.
It is the second career title for the 21-year-old Croatian and is, arguably, his best career win. He won his first title on a clay court last year at Marrakech.
We will next see all of these players at Wimbledon for the third Grand Slam event of the year where Roger will be bidding for a ninth title. That tournament will begin on July 2, 2018.
