As announced by Bellator last night via Twitter, UFC legend and former light heavyweight champion, Lyoto Machida has signed an exclusive multi-fight contract with the MMA promotion.
Machida, one of the most respected UFC fighters of all time, leaves UFC with a 24-8 record with 10 wins coming via knockout. He has notable victories against some of the best fighters in the industry such as Dan Henderson, Randy Couture, Tito Oritz, and many others. They have all taken a loss to the “Dragon”.
Machida, made his professional debut in Tokyo, Japan in 2003 when he defeated Kengo Watanabe at NJPW’s Ultimate Clash, with his second win coming against future UFC Hall of Famer Stephan Bonnar in Brazil.
Machida made his UFC debut in 2007 with an 8-0 professional record, picking up his first UFC win against Sam Hoger at UFC 67. He would continue his winning streak, picking up eight more wins and capturing the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship in the process against Rashad Evans at UFC 98. His final fight in the promotion pitted him against Victor Belfort back in May at UFC 224 where he won via knockout. He was given the award for “Performance of the Night.”
Now at age 40, Machida begins a new chapter with Bellator. While no official date or matchup has been set, Machida will look to dominate yet another promotion.
