Kyle Larson started his weekend off well by securing pole Saturday afternoon. He has always qualified well at this raceway but has failed to ever finish inside the top 12. His average finish at this track is 20th, which doesn’t represent Larson’s overall talent very well.
Although Larson had some mechanical issues during the final practice on Friday afternoon, it didn’t seem to affect him during qualifying. He flew through the track in just 75.732 seconds, while barely edging Martin Truex Jr. by just .09 seconds.
Larson seems fast and determined, but this looks quite familiar. “I can always qualify good here for some reason, but racing seems to be a struggle, for whatever reason,” Larson said. “I smoke the tires off it.”
“I’ve been working hard to get better each and every year. I spent some time in the simulator and feel like I’ve learned some things there. I thought we had a good practice yesterday and the last run was pretty decent. So, it would be nice to get a win here.”
While I believe Larson has moved on from his past SONOMA struggles, this tricky road course is tough to conquer. Will Larson finally figure things out at SONOMA? Kevin Harvick, Clint Bowyer and Denny Hamlin may have something to say about that.
