Portugal were coming into the game against Morocco after a tough battle with Spain that ended in a 3-3 tie. In that game, Cristiano Ronaldo put in all three goals and he looked to continue that streak against Morocco. The Moroccans were coming into the game after a tough late game own goal loss, showing great skill and determination against Iran in their opener.
It didn’t take long for Portugal to take the lead. In the 4th minute, Portugal won a corner kick. It was a short corner with Bernardo Silva passing a two yard ball to Joao Moutinho who took it with a one touch cross. That’s all Ronaldo needed, as he split the Moroccan defense to score a diving header from six yards out to the upper right side of the goal with such power, all the Moroccan goalie El Kajoui could do was watch it go past. With such an early goal, things were looking great for Portugal to continue their scoring prowess. But in the end, it was Ronaldo’s header that proved to be enough.
Morocco never let up the whole game and had some excellent looks at the goal, but ultimately were unable to find the back of the net. With the 1-0 loss, it eliminated Morroco from advancing, but they have one more game against Spain on June 25th. The win puts Portugal in a tie for first place with Spain, both having 4 points and exactly the same goals for and goals against. Portugal needs to tie or win against Iran, also on June 25th to move forward to the next round. With a loss, Iran could eliminate them and move on. So there will be a lot of high pressure from Iran to score, allowing for quick counters from the deadliest goal scorer of the World Cup so far. Game MVP: Cristiano Ronaldo with the game winning goal.
