In 2012, the soccer team Tottenham Hotspur began to plan the construction of their new stadium, called ‘The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium’. Three years later, the soccer club and the NFL agreed to a 10-year deal to host a minimum of two NFL games a season as stadium construction began in 2016.
In 2018, however, the Spurs will only host one fixture. According to the NFL’s executive vice president Mark Waller, when the NFL was initially introduced to the UK in 2007, Wembley only played one fixture. When Twickenham stadium was announced as a host for NFL games in 2016, again there was only one fixture, before moving on to two the following year. There is a pattern there, and it is clear that the NFL intended these international stadiums to be in conjunction with one another regarding their fixtures.
It will be the world’s first stadium with a dividing retractable NFL pitch. This is to ensure that the soccer fields stay intact for soccer games, because the fields do not accommodate for American football and are prone to getting torn up.
The NFL field is set to make it’s debut on October 14, 2018 when the Seahawks take on the Raiders.
