Less than one week after being crownedc the 66th IWGP Heavyweight Champion in what the wrestling world has deemed ‘the best match in wrestling history’, Kenny Omega already has his first title defense lined up.

Omega will be putting his newly-won championship on the line against fellow Bullet Club member Cody at the G1 Special in San Francisco on July 7.

The two are no strangers to each other in the ring, as they’ve battled each other in ROH’s Supercard of Honor XII in a match that saw Cody defeat Kenny following inadvertent super-kicks from the Young Bucks.

That match furthered a rivalry that saw Cody attempt to rid ‘The Cleaner’ of his Bullet Club leadership. The story continued even further on The Elite’s popular YouTube series Being the Elite, which follows the careers of the Young Bucks, Kenny and Cody, as well as furthers storylines that have been presented/facilitated in wrestling promotions.

Cody’s attempts at assuming leadership of the group, as well as driving a wedge in the relationship of the friendship between the Bucks and Kenny Omega, have drawn the ire of Omega. This has led to the group having numerous disagreements, as well as forced a divide throughout the Bullet Club itself. This has also resulted in NJPW cards pitting Bullet Club members against each other in recent months, as well as Kenny and Cody butting heads on frequent occasions.

Who will walk out of San Francisco with NJPW’s most prestigious title? Will the Bullet Club finally be fine after this battle is over? Tune into NJPW’s G1 Special in San Francisco on July 7, live on AXS to find out!
