Nadal won his 11th French Open final on Sunday with his win over Dominic Thiem, pulling him closer to Federer on the all-time title list. For Nadal though, just reaching the finals of a major is a feat in itself.
Here is a listing of the top five players with the most Grand Slam finals appearances to date.
5. Pete Sampras
Grand Slam Finals: 18
The American won 14 of the 18 times that he played in a final. His most successful tournament was Wimbledon where he made seven finals appearances, never losing any. The only void he had in an illustrious career is he never made it to a French Open final.
4. Ivan Lendl
Grand Slam Finals: 19
Ivan won eight majors but does have the unfortunate distinction of being the player with the most losses in a Grand Slam final, with 11. His most successful major was the US Open where he made eight consecutive appearances, winning three of them.
3. Novak Djokovic
Grand Slam Finals: 21
The Serbian had been inching closer and closer to the top two on this list until Federer and Nadal took over the sport again in the last 6 Grand Slams. He has made it to the US Open final the most but holds a 2-5 record there. Novak’s best win percentage is at the Australian Open, where he is undefeated in all six appearances.
2. Rafael Nadal
Grand Slam Finals: 24
The current world No. 1 has an impeccable winning percentage when it comes to his Grand Slam finals appearances. Of course, it is known that he is the King of Clay and it is also no secret that his best Grand Slam is the French Open. He has now won a record 11 titles there. The major he would like to improve at is the Australian Open, where he has only been victorious one time in four tries.
1. Roger Federer
Grand Slam Finals: 30
Roger’s amazing track record speaks for itself, making it to an incredible 30 finals. He has appeared several times in all four of the majors. His most successful showing is at Wimbledon, where he has made 11 finals and taken home the winner’s trophy a record eight times. Federer’s worst Grand Slam win percentage is at the French Open where he holds a 1-4 record in the finals.
