Two-time French Open champion Maria Sharapova sent a clear message to the rest of the draw on Saturday: She is here to win. Maria dominated the No. 6 seeded Karolina Pliskova in the third round, 6-2, 6-1.
During the match it was quickly apparent that Maria was in the zone, as she glided around the court with ease and was striking the ball cleanly.
Pliskova was made to play defense many times in the match against the power and aggressiveness from Sharapova. She ended up being broken on her service game 5 times by the Russian.
Head to head, Sharapova now leads 2-0 over Pliskova.
The real potential test for Sharapova now comes in the 4th round where she will face the winner of the Serena Williams-Julia Görges match.
It will be no surprise who Maria will be rooting for in that one. She is 4-0 against Görges but is currently on an unbelievable losing streak to Williams. Sharapova has not beaten Serena in their last 18 meetings, and not since 2004. It is certainly safe to say that Serena has her number.
This could be the Russian’s best chance in a long time though, as Serena is still trying to get back to form after only playing a few matches in the past 15 months due to having a baby last summer.
Williams came back from a set down in the 2nd round to will her way into the matchup with Görges, and is trying to win her 4th French Open title.
Serena and Görges are set to play later on Saturday and the winner will face Sharapova on Monday.
