If you thought that the Warriors core was going anywhere anytime soon, you were shown by Klay Thompson’s recent comments how that most likely won’t be the case.

There has been reports that the Golden State Warriors and Klay Thompson have been in negotiations for a multiple year contract extension.

By doing this it could save the franchise money in the short term and the long term.

Being a multi-year contract extension, it will be longer term, and most likely back-loaded, leaving the Warriors with more flexibility short term to re-sign others like Kevin Durant and some reserves this off-season. It also helps long term because they won’t have to match anyone’s offers for Thompson if he were to test the free agent market two summers from now.

It has been said that Thompson could be sacrificing up to $80 Million dollars by not entering free agency when his contract is up at the end of the 2018-2019 season.

Thompson has said on record recently that playing with one team your entire career is something he views as special.

Golden State still needs to sign Durant in the off-season.  We all know that they will, but we are still wondering what route he will take.  Will he take the route Thompson is reportedly taking like he’s done before, or will he be looking for the max deal this time around?

After that, they won’t have to worry about signing any of their All-stars until the end of the 2019-2020 season when Draymond Green’s contract is up.  Who knows, maybe he considers leaving money on the table in free agency as well, and signs a multi-year extension.

Maybe the All-star quad is going to be around for a lot longer than you expected.
