New Orleans Saints RB Mark Ingram was suspended earlier this week for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. He is set to miss the first four games of the season.
With Alvin Kamara at the helm again this season, most people would think it’s not such a big deal. To the Saints, losing Ingram is a huge deal. He’s a productive power back who can easily tear off five to seven yards on a third down.
Kamara will be able to hold down the fort for the first four weeks without issue. I would look for undrafted rookie Trey Edmunds to step up and fill the spot as the number two back in the early going.
The loss of Ingram could cost them a game, potentially. Kamara doesn’t have the power and Edmunds doesn’t have the speed in relation to size that Ingram does. Overall, the Saints will miss him in the early going.
It does not seem like they plan on signing anyone to fill his spot for the few games he will miss. For a player looking for a new contract, that is a good sign for him. They value him. Look for his Week 5 return.
