St. Louis Cardinals will be without their star catcher, Yadier Molina, after he underwent emergency surgery to treat a traumatic hematoma on Saturday night.

Molina left the game in the eighth inning after Kris Bryant foul tipped a fastball straight back into his groin; the pitch was recorded at 102 MPH.

“That was a bad one,” Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said in a post-game interview. “Those don’t necessarily feel better tomorrow.”

The catcher is expected to miss around a month, and Sunday the team will place him on the 10-day DL until more information is available on his status.

While no official roster moves have been made at this time, the Cardinals do have Carson Kelly in Triple-A Memphis, who is the top catching prospect. It was reported that he was a late scratch during their game Saturday night and is expected to join the Cardinals Sunday as the Cardinals face the Chicago Cubs.
