It was an all-German quarterfinal match-up as Alexander Zverev advanced to the semi-finals of the Munich Open on Friday by beating Jan-Lennard Struff 6-3, 6-2.
It was the second consecutive year that the two met in the Munich quarter-final, with Zverev winning both contests.
Zverev broke Struff on his first service game with a nice forehand shot to the corner to go up 2-0. Struff was able to break right back on Zverev’s next service game, but that would be the last time. A couple of breaks later Zverev took the 1st set.
The 2nd set was much of the same, and the 21-year-old Zverev soon found himself in his third semi-final appearance of 2018. He also reached the finals at Miami and the semi-finals in Monte Carlo.
The world number 3 will next play South Korea’s Hyeon Chung, whom he has never beaten. Chung most recently defeated Zverev in the third round at this year’s Australian Open in a tough 5 set match.
Chung earlier defeated Martin Kližan of Slovakia 6-3, 6-4.
The match is scheduled to be played on Saturday.
