The former number one announced on his Facebook page Wednesday that the first tournament he will be playing, upon his return, will be at the Mercedes Cup in June.
It is an event that he has never won but is hoping to add to his impressive singles titles collection, to which he has won 97, second only to Jimmy Connors at 109 in the Open Era.
Federer is looking to rebound from a bad loss at the Miami Open back in March to unranked Thanasi Kokkinakis.
It was the first time that the 36-year-old had lost back to back matches since 2014. The loss cost him the number one seed to Rafael Nadal.
Federer took the clay court season off this year, as he did in 2017, to be ready for the grass and hard court seasons. It paid off well for him last year, as he won his record eighth Wimbledon and his joint-record 6th Australian Open at the start of this year.
The Mercedes Open switched from clay courts to grass courts in 2015.
The tournament will start on June 11th in Stuttgart, Germany.
