Nate Diaz, the ‘Stockton gangster’, could be returning soon. There are multiple reports that Diaz is currently in talks to return to UFC 227 in August. He hinted earlier this year at a UFC return sometime in the summer. Originally he wanted to fight UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley, but Dana White was quick to turn that down.
We last saw Diaz at UFC 202 where he lost a majority decision to Conor McGregor in their on-going two fight rivalry. Initially I thought Diaz had won… but I was drunk and in Denver doing Diaz things. That’s how close this war was. Upon sober review it was clear Conor had won three rounds to two. It was an amazing fight, and easily in contention for the fight of the year. Since then, (allegedly) the UFC has offered him Eddie Alvarez, Khabib Nurmagomedov and others.
Nate Diaz’s return could arguably be the biggest non-champion comeback of all time. He is tied for the most post-fight bonuses in UFC history, with 15. He has eight fight of the nights, one knockout of the night, five submission of the nights and one performance of the night bonus.
His return at UFC 227, if it were to happen, would most likely be the co-main event to the TJ Dillashaw vs Cody Garbrandt fight. I like Diaz fighting either Justin Gaethje, Jorge Masvidal, Al Iaquinta or Edson Barboza. But only time will tell if and when the return of Nate Diaz will be a reality.
