This time of year is hard for some older players. They find themselves in a situation where they make more money than the team is willing to pay them. This is the case for Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart.
Stewart was set to make just under $4 million this upcoming season. With Christian McCaffrey coming into just his second year, he is sure to develop beyond the 435 yards and 2 touchdowns he had last season. Thus, Stewart becomes expendable.
He is the team’s all-time leader in rushing yards (7,318) and has the second most rushing touchdowns (51) behind Cam Newton (54). This goes to show you that football is a business and loyalty doesn’t exist for a player.
At 30 years old, about to turn 31, if he doesn’t choose to retire, I’m sure some team will bring him in on a one-year deal to add a veteran presence.
