2018 NFL Supplemental Draft: Two Players Taken For The First Time Since 2010

Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the NY Giants will forfeit a 2019 third round pick to draft Western Michigan standout CB Sam Beal. The Washington Redskins will forfeit a 2019 sixth round pick to draft Virginia Tech CB Adonis Alexander.

The NFC East was very active during this year’s supplemental draft. Sam Beal became the first player taken in the draft since Isaiah Battle in 2015. The Redskins selecting Alexander makes it the first time since 2010 that two players were drafted (Harvey Unga & Josh Brent). Notable recent supplemental draftees include Terrelle Pryor in 2011 and Josh Gordon in 2012.

Sam Beal is a 6 ft. 1 in., beal-alexander187 lb. corner out of Western Michigan who earned All-MAC second team honors in 2017, his junior season. NFL scouts expected Beal to be a top 100 pick in this year’s NFL draft. So why wasn’t he drafted? Beal hoped to finish his college degree and return to WMU for his senior season. He became a few credits behind in his academics and enrolled in summer classes. However, the NCAA had not yet determined if he would be eligible to play in the upcoming season. Not wanting to risk wasting a year of eligibility, Beal decided to declare for the supplemental draft. The NFL’s collective bargaining agreement allows a player to apply for admission to the supplemental draft if they become eligible after the NFL’s initial draft in the spring.

Adonis Alexander out of Virginia Tech will bring colossal size, 6 ft. 3 in., 207 lbs. to a CB group already consisting of Josh Norman and Orlando Scandrick. The Redskins lost their promising young CB Kendall Fuller in the trade for Quarterback Alex Smith prompting them to sign Scandrick. Alexander will most likely not see much action this season but will provide solid depth in the secondary.
